This statue commemorates the great American philanthropist George Peabody (1795-1869) who was a benefactor of the London poor. It was erected in July 1869 only four month before the death of its subject, who was too ill to attend the unveiling ceremony by the then Prince of The Peabody apartment takes its name from the historic Peabody complex in which it is located. The four buildings were the beginning of the Peabody Trust, one of London’s oldest housing associations created by American-British philanthropist, George Peabody. They do not communicate with you: take days, weeks or months to get back to you, do not keep an eye on buildings and do barely anything to make sure the management company (in our case First Port) are looking after the buildings.
